Walkers find easy access to Paddington Meadows and the Ecology Park and recent surveys have shown increasing presence of wildlife especially Willow Tits and Grey Partridge. In one area the Willow Tits have raised 4 young this year.
Ian Johnson Chairman of the New Cut Heritage and Ecology group recently set up to protect and improve the area said “It is wonderful news that the local authorities are now giving greater importance to this asset. Warrington has relatively few green open spaces for wildlife and people to coexist and the town’s ranking close to the bottom of the survey of UK towns preservation of heritage can only be helped with this.”
The New Cut Canal is the most complete part of the Mersey and Irwell Navigation still in existence, the fore runner of the Manchester Ship Canal and a major competitor in the 19th century to the Bridgewater Canal
